In-person practitioners

The original. A human reads your chart face to face. Quality depends entirely on who you get.

What this category does well: Human nuance. A good practitioner reads your face, your energy, your hesitation when you ask about your marriage. No AI replicates that.

What it doesn't: No memory between sessions. No follow-up unless you pay again. Quality is a lottery — a bad practitioner wastes your money and your time. No way to verify accuracy before you pay.

Courses — learn to read charts yourself

Not readings. Education. You learn the system so you can read your own chart and others'.

The right choice if: You want to become a practitioner yourself, not just get a reading. The investment is in years of knowledge, not one session.

PDF reports — pay once, read forever

A written analysis of your chart. Generated once. Static. Cannot ask follow-up questions.

What this category does well: You own a document. You can re-read it. Some reports (Sean Chan's especially) are genuinely deep and written by experienced practitioners.

What it doesn't: A PDF is frozen at the moment it's generated. Your life changes. Your questions change. The PDF doesn't. You can't ask "what does this mean for my career decision next month?" — you'd need to buy another report.

AI platforms — the new category

Launched between 2024–2026. AI reads your chart. Instant. Some are conversational. Quality varies enormously because most use general LLMs without validated BaZi calculation engines.

What this category does well: Instant. Available at 3 AM when you need it. Cheaper than practitioners. Some (cantian.ai, jenova.ai) offer genuine conversational depth.

What most don't tell you: The calculation accuracy problem. BaZi readings depend on getting the Four Pillars right — the exact Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches for your birth moment. Most AI platforms use general LLMs that approximate this math. The reading sounds confident. The chart underneath may be wrong. And you have no way to check unless you already know how to read a chart yourself.

Two platforms that hide their pricing (cantian.ai, fatemaster.ai) make comparison difficult by design. If a platform won't show you the price before you sign up, that tells you something.

Free calculators — the raw chart, no interpretation

What this category does well: If you know how to read a BaZi chart, these tools are all you need. bazi-calculator.com in particular shows more raw data than any AI platform — more symbolic stars, more interaction types, more percentage breakdowns.

What it doesn't: If you don't know how to read a chart, a calculator gives you an X-ray with no doctor. Technically accurate. Practically useless.

Ask ChatGPT or DeepSeek — free, but the math is wrong

The most popular approach in 2026: paste your birth date into DeepSeek or ChatGPT and ask for a BaZi reading.

The core problem: General LLMs don't have a BaZi calculation engine. They approximate based on training data. For common birth dates they may get it right. For less common configurations, they guess. A BaZi reading built on a wrong chart isn't just inaccurate — it's confidently, convincingly wrong about your life.

DeepSeek went viral in China in early 2025 for BaZi readings, with over 2 million mentions on WeChat in one month. But virality doesn't mean accuracy.
