What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
紫微斗数 (Zǐ Wēi Dǒu Shù) is a Chinese star-mapping system that reads your life through twelve palaces and their stars. It was formalized during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) and has been practiced continuously for over a thousand years.
The name translates literally: 紫微 (Zǐ Wēi) — the Purple Star, the Emperor Star. 斗 (Dǒu) — the Northern Dipper. 数 (Shù) — calculation. In English, it's sometimes called "Purple Star Astrology" — though it has nothing to do with Western astrology.
How It Works
You give the system five data points: year, month, day, hour, and gender. From these, the system calculates:
Twelve palaces (十二宫), each governing a domain of life:
| Palace | Domain |
|---|---|
| 命宫 Life | Core identity |
| 兄弟宫 Siblings | Peer relationships, colleagues |
| 夫妻宫 Partnership | Closest relationships, marriage |
| 子女宫 Children | Creative output, legacy |
| 财帛宫 Wealth | Money, how you earn |
| 疾厄宫 Health | Physical constitution |
| 迁移宫 Migration | Travel, external environment |
| 交友宫 Friends | Social network, benefactors |
| 事业宫 Career | Professional identity |
| 田宅宫 Assets | Fixed assets, property, IP |
| 福德宫 Blessings | Inner peace, mental state |
| 父母宫 Parents | Authority figures, education |
14 main stars are placed into these palaces based on your birth data. Each star has a nature — 紫微 is authority, 天机 is strategy, 太阳 is visibility, 太阴 is depth, 贪狼 is desire, 七杀 is pressure.
七杀 in your Career Palace means something entirely different from 七杀 in your Partnership Palace. Same star. Different palace. Different life.
18 auxiliary stars add nuance. 左辅 and 右弼 are helpers. 文昌 and 文曲 are intelligence. 擎羊 and 陀罗 are obstacles that forge strength.
Four Transformations (四化) turn the static chart into a living one. Every year, a different set of stars carries these markers. The chart shifts annually without changing its foundation.
How It's Different from BaZi
Both systems use the same birth data. Both are Chinese. But they read different things.
BaZi reads your constitutional element composition — what you're made of. Five Elements, Ten Gods, Production and Control cycles. It answers: what is your nature?
ZWDS reads your life's structural layout — what happens where and when. Twelve palaces, star placements, decade activation. It answers: what does your life look like from above?
The best reading uses both. BaZi tells you who you are. ZWDS tells you what you're working with.
The Decade System
ZWDS charts aren't static. Every ten years, a new palace activates. This is the decade system (大限). The decade transitions explain why your thirties felt nothing like your twenties, and what's coming next.
Your bureau (局) determines when these decade transitions happen. There are five bureaus — Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5, Fire 6. Each starts the decade clock at a different age.
Why It's Less Known in the West
ZWDS is structurally more complex. Twelve palaces, 32 stars, Four Transformations, decade activation, bureau calculation — the system has more moving parts. Fewer practitioners teach it in English. The English-language content that does exist is scattered across forums and unmaintained sites from the 2000s.
This is exactly why 知己 exists. The calculation engine handles the complexity. The reading translates it.
