Why Two Systems
BaZi and ZWDS read the same life from different angles.
BaZi is elemental. It tells you what you are made of. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal — in specific proportions, with specific interactions. BaZi is the material.
ZWDS is architectural. It tells you how your life is structured. Twelve palaces, each governing a different domain, each populated with specific stars at specific brightness levels. ZWDS is the blueprint.
BaZi without ZWDS: you know the material but not the building. ZWDS without BaZi: you know the building but not what it is made of. Together: you know the building, the material, and which room you are standing in right now.
知己 reads both. Always. The reading uses BaZi to establish your elemental constitution and ZWDS to map how that constitution operates across the domains of your life.
The Chart Grid
Your ZWDS chart is a square grid of twelve boxes. Four boxes across the top. Four down the right side. Four across the bottom. Four up the left side. The centre is empty — it holds your birth data and chart metadata.
Each box is a palace. Each palace sits on one of the twelve Earthly Branches (子 through 亥). Inside each palace are stars — between zero and four main stars, plus auxiliary stars, plus brightness ratings, plus transformation states.
The grid is read as a whole, not palace by palace. The stars in your Career Palace interact with the stars in your Wealth Palace which interact with the stars in your Life Palace. The reading synthesises the entire grid at once.
The Fourteen Main Stars
ZWDS uses fourteen main stars. They divide into two groups based on how they are calculated.
The Emperor's Court (紫微 Group): 紫微 (Emperor), 天机 (Strategist), 太阳 (Sun), 武曲 (Warrior), 天同 (Contentment), 廉贞 (Pride). These six are positioned based on where 紫微 lands.
The Treasury's Court (天府 Group): 天府 (Treasury), 太阴 (Moon), 贪狼 (Wolf), 巨门 (Dark Gate), 天相 (Minister), 天梁 (Canopy), 七杀 (Seven Killings). These seven are positioned based on where 天府 lands.
破军 (Pioneer): Always opposite 天府. Completing the axis.
Every chart has all fourteen. No exceptions. They are always present. What varies is which palaces they land in and how bright they are in those positions.
Star Brightness
The same star in different palaces operates at different power levels. Brightness is the technical term.
庙 (Temple): Full power. The star does exactly what it is designed to do, at maximum capacity.
旺 (Prosperous): Near-full power. Strong and effective.
得 (Gaining): Above average. The star works. Not at its peak, but functional and reliable.
平 (Neutral): Average. The star is present but unremarkable.
闲 (Idle): Weak. The star is present but underperforming.
陷 (Fallen): Weakest. The star's energy is distorted or inverted. The disciplined general becomes reckless aggression. The brilliant strategist becomes paralytic overthinking.
Brightness is determined by which branch the star occupies. The tables are fixed. They do not change. Your chart assigns each star to a branch. The brightness follows.
The Auxiliary Stars
Beyond the fourteen main stars, your chart contains auxiliary stars that modify how the main stars operate. Think of main stars as the melody and auxiliary stars as the harmony, percussion, and orchestration.
The Lucky Six (六吉星): 左辅, 右弼, 文昌, 文曲, 天魁, 天钺. Support. Intelligence. Noble helpers.
The Challenging Six (六煞星): 擎羊, 陀罗, 火星, 铃星, 地空, 地劫. Friction. Pressure. Sharpening forces.
Wealth Group: 禄存 always travels with 擎羊 on one side and 陀罗 on the other. Prosperity flanked by blades.
Movement and Romance: 天马 (movement), 红鸾 (romantic activation), 天喜 (joy), 天刑 (accountability), 天姚 (magnetism).
A main star alone tells you the theme. A main star with auxiliary stars tells you the texture, the complications, the amplifiers, and the specific flavour of that theme in your life.
The Four Transformations · 四化
The dynamic engine of ZWDS. Stars are the landscape. 四化 is the weather.
Every stem (Heavenly Stem) generates four transformations that land on specific stars:
化禄 (Prosperity Transformation): Fuel. Flow. Ease. The star it touches becomes generous and productive. Doors open. Resources flow.
化权 (Authority Transformation): Power. Control. Stubbornness. The star it touches becomes forceful. The star insists on its nature with greater intensity.
化科 (Recognition Transformation): Fame. Reputation. Polish. The star it touches becomes visible and respected. Quiet recognition from the right people.
化忌 (Obstruction Transformation): Difficulty. Obsession. The lesson. The star it touches becomes blocked or compulsive. The palace receiving 化忌 is where life tests you most intensely.
化忌 is not bad. It is the arrow pointing to the lesson. The palace and star receiving 化忌 is where you will be tested hardest. It is also where you will develop the most genuine capacity — if you face it directly. Avoidance produces recurring crisis.
Three layers of 四化 operate simultaneously: Natal 四化 (from your Year Stem, lifelong), Decade 四化 (from the decade palace's Stem, active for ten years), and Annual 四化 (from the year's Stem, active for one year).
Where all three converge on the same palace, the effect is maximum. Where they conflict, you experience internal contradiction between long-term patterns and short-term forces.
命主 and 身主 — Life Governor and Body Governor
Two additional reference points in every chart.
命主 (Life Governor): Determined by which branch your Life Palace sits on. This star describes the governing principle of your life. 禄存 as Life Governor: life governed by discipline, method, accumulated resource.
身主 (Body Governor): Determined by your year branch (your zodiac animal). This star describes how your body engages the world. 文昌 as Body Governor: the body engages through comprehension. Understanding precedes movement.
The Five Element Configuration · 五行局
← 命主 and 身主 — Life Governor and Body Governor
Your chart has a Five Element Configuration (局) that determines two critical things: the starting age of your first decade, and the lifecycle phase sequence.
| Configuration | Starting Age | Element |
|---|---|---|
| 水二局 Water 2 | Age 2 | Water |
| 木三局 Wood 3 | Age 3 | Wood |
| 金四局 Metal 4 | Age 4 | Metal |
| 土五局 Earth 5 | Age 5 | Earth |
| 火六局 Fire 6 | Age 6 | Fire |
The Configuration is calculated from the Nayin of your Life Palace's stem-branch combination. This is why two people born on the same day but at different hours can have completely different decade timing.
How Decades Work in ZWDS
← The Five Element Configuration
Every ten years, a new palace becomes your temporary Life Palace. Your decade luck rotates through all twelve palaces over the course of your life.
When a decade activates a palace: that palace becomes your temporary Life Palace, all twelve palaces shift accordingly, the decade palace's Heavenly Stem generates a new set of 四化 that layer on top of your natal 四化, and the lifecycle phase of that palace describes the energy available.
The natal stars do not move. They stay in their birth positions forever. But the decade lens changes how they are read. This is the engine that makes the same chart feel like a different life every ten years.
Reading The Chart — What Matters Most
If the grid feels overwhelming, start here:
First: Look at your Life Palace. What main stars are there? How bright are they? What 四化 do they carry? This is your constitutional identity in ZWDS.
Second: Look at your current decade palace. What stars are there? What lifecycle phase? What decade 四化 are generated? This is where you are right now.
Third: Check the power triangle. Your Life Palace + Career Palace + Wealth Palace + Migration Palace. These four together describe your core identity-money-career axis.
Fourth: Check where 化忌 lands — both natal and decade. That is where the current lesson lives. It is also where the current growth lives.
Everything else adds resolution. The reading synthesises all of it. But the four steps above give you the skeleton.
How BaZi and ZWDS Talk To Each Other
← Reading The Chart — What Matters Most
BaZi says you are 壬 Water. Yang. The ocean. Depth that processes everything.
ZWDS says your Career Palace has 太阴 化权 at 午. The Moon with Authority at the Horse branch. Career power through the hidden, the indirect, the strategic.
Together: a Water person whose career authority comes not from volume but from depth. Not from the loudest voice but from the one the room realises was right after the meeting ends.
BaZi says zero natal Fire. ZWDS says the Career Palace sits at 午 (Fire branch) and activates at age 42. Together: the element the constitution lacks arrives through the career, at a specific age, through a specific palace activation. The chart scheduled the Fire. It just scheduled it late.
This is why 知己 reads both systems on every chart. One system alone tells half the story. Both together tell the complete one.
What To Do Next
← How BaZi and ZWDS Talk To Each Other
You now understand the grid. The palaces. The stars. The brightness. The transformations. The decades.
Run your chart. Look at the grid. Find your Life Palace. Find your current decade palace. Read the stars in both. Then open the conversation with 知己 and ask about whatever catches your attention.
The chart is a map. The reading is the guide pointing at the map. The conversation is where the guide answers your specific questions about your specific terrain.
