Why Three Systems
Zhiji uses three systems. Not because more is better. Because each one answers a different question, and the full picture requires all three answers.
BaZi (八字) tells you what you are.
ZWDS (紫微斗数) tells you where you are.
I Ching (易经) tells you what is happening right now.
Read them in this order. Each one calibrates the next.
BaZi — The Constitution
BaZi means "eight characters." Four pillars, each with a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Your Year, Month, Day, and Hour of birth.
What it reveals: Your elemental makeup. Your Day Master. Your Ten God relationships. Your hidden stems. Your decade sequence. Your special formations.
What it's good at: Constitutional analysis. Telling you the shape of the instrument.
What it doesn't do well: BaZi is elemental, not spatial. It tells you what energies are present but doesn't assign them to specific life domains. For that, you need palaces.
The analogy: BaZi is the blood test. It tells you exactly what's in your system.
ZWDS — The Map
ZWDS places stars into a twelve-palace grid based on your birth data. Each palace governs a specific life domain: Life (命宫), Siblings (兄弟), Partnership (夫妻), Children (子女), Wealth (财帛), Health (疾厄), Travel (迁移), Friends (交友), Career (事业), Property (田宅), Blessings (福德), Parents (父母).
What it's good at: Spatial specificity. ZWDS tells you exactly which life domain is activated, which stars govern it, and how energy shifts across decades and years.
The analogy: ZWDS is the MRI. It shows you exactly which organ is affected.
I Ching — The Movement
The I Ching uses 64 hexagrams to describe the 64 fundamental situations a person or system can be in.
What it reveals: The current state of movement. Not "what will happen" but "what is happening." Every hexagram describes a situation: its nature, its risks, its opportunities, and its natural direction of change.
What it's good at: Present-moment clarity. It captures dynamics too immediate for decade-level analysis and too situational for constitutional analysis.
The analogy: The I Ching is the real-time monitor.
How They Work Together
BaZi without ZWDS gives you the constitution but not the map. ZWDS without BaZi gives you the map but not the foundation. I Ching without both gives you present-moment insight but no structural context.
Together:
1. BaZi tells you: you are 壬 Yang Water. Deep, patient, vast.
2. ZWDS tells you: your Career palace holds 太阴 with 化权. Your current decade activates 田宅 with three resource stars.
3. I Ching tells you: you are in 复 (Return) moving toward 无妄 (Innocence). The first yang line is returning after complete emptiness.
Each layer adds resolution. The full picture is the three layers read together.
Which One Should I Learn First
Start with BaZi. It's the foundation. Then read your ZWDS palaces. Then let the I Ching reading do its work. Zhiji integrates all three.
