What a Decade Is
Your chart is not a photograph. It is a movie.
The Four Pillars capture the moment you arrived. The elements, the Ten Gods, the palaces — they describe who you are. Fixed. Constitutional. But you already knew that your life at 15 was not your life at 35. Something changed. Not you. The season.
The Decade System is how BaZi and ZWDS track the seasons of your life.
In BaZi, your life is divided into periods of roughly ten years each, called 大运 (Dà Yùn). Each decade is governed by a different Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch pair, which brings a different elemental energy into your chart.
In ZWDS (紫微斗数), the same concept exists as 大限 (Dà Xiàn). Each decade activates a different palace in your twelve-palace grid, bringing the stars in that palace into play.
Both systems are tracking the same thing from different angles. BaZi decades tell you what elemental weather is arriving. ZWDS decades tell you which room in your house you're living in. Together, they give you both the climate and the address.
How Decades Are Calculated
Your decade sequence is determined at birth. The starting age depends on your gender and the Yin/Yang polarity of your birth year's Heavenly Stem.
Yang year + male, or Yin year + female: count forward through the months from your birth date. Yin year + male, or Yang year + female: count backward.
The number of days between your birth date and the next (or previous) seasonal node is converted into years. That gives you the age your first decade begins. Some people start at 2. Some start at 8. The starting age itself is meaningful — it tells you how early or late the external seasons begin shaping your life.
Every ten years after that, a new decade pillar activates.
You don't need to calculate this yourself. Zhiji does it instantly. What matters is understanding what the decades mean once you see them.
The Twelve Lifecycle Phases
Each decade doesn't just bring elemental energy. It also carries a lifecycle phase. There are twelve phases, and they cycle in order. Think of them as the seasons within the seasons.
长生 Zhǎng Shēng — Birth. New energy emerging. Like spring's first warmth. Something is beginning. Potential is high, form is not yet settled.
沐浴 Mù Yù — Bathing. The newborn washed clean. Vulnerability. Exposure. This phase strips away what doesn't belong. It can feel destabilizing because old protections are being removed, but the removal is preparation.
冠带 Guān Dài — Capping. The young adult receives their ceremonial cap. Growing into a role. Taking on responsibility for the first time. Ambition sharpening. Not yet fully capable, but visibly becoming.
临官 Lín Guān — Approaching Office. Full professional emergence. The person arrives at their station. Energy is strong, directed, productive. This is often when career momentum becomes visible to others.
帝旺 Dì Wàng — Peak. Maximum strength. The element at its highest expression. Everything works. Influence is at its widest. The risk here is overextension — the peak is also where the turn begins.
衰 Shuāi — Decline. Energy begins to recede. Not collapse. Recession. Like autumn after summer. The harvest is in, but the growth season is ending. Wisdom begins to replace force.
病 Bìng — Illness. Vulnerability. The system is weakened. Not necessarily physical illness — this is the phase where whatever was overextended begins to show strain. Rest is not optional here. It is structural.
死 Sǐ — Death. Not physical death. The end of a cycle. The element reaches its lowest active expression. Something that was alive in your life completes. A role ends. An identity releases. This phase is feared more than it deserves to be.
墓 Mù — Tomb. Storage. What died is now stored, not gone. Think of a seed buried in winter soil. The energy is contained, compressed, invisible. This phase holds enormous potential precisely because it holds everything that came before.
绝 Jué — Extinction. The deepest point. The element is at its absolute minimum. This is the moment before rebirth. The darkest hour. The person in 绝 often feels like nothing is working, nothing is growing, nothing is alive. That feeling is accurate — and temporary.
胎 Tāi — Conception. New life forming. Not yet visible, but already real. The first stirring after complete emptiness. Something is being conceived in the dark. The person may not even recognize it yet. But the seed has been planted.
养 Yǎng — Nurturing. The conceived life is being fed. Gestation. Quiet growth. Protection. The new thing is not ready to be shown to the world yet. It needs time, safety, and nourishment before it emerges.
Then the cycle begins again at 长生.
Why 绝 Is Not What You Think
Most people see "Extinction" and panic. Understandable. The word is violent. The experience can feel violent.
But 绝 is not an ending. It is the bottom of the cycle. The moment of maximum compression before the next cycle begins. Every 绝 is followed by 胎 (Conception). Every extinction precedes a birth.
The person in a 绝 decade is being emptied. Old structures dissolve. Foundations that seemed permanent reveal themselves as temporary. Income, identity, relationships, certainty — whatever was built on sand gets cleared.
This is not punishment. This is preparation.
The question in a 绝 decade is not "how do I stop this." You can't stop a season. The question is "what am I building underneath the dissolution that will be ready when 胎 arrives?"
The root system grows deepest in winter. Not because winter is kind. Because winter removes everything that isn't root.
Foundation Decades and Harvest Decades
Not every decade is for the same kind of work.
A decade in 长生, 冠带, or 临官 is a building decade. Energy is rising. New things are possible. The season supports growth, expansion, and visible progress.
A decade in 帝旺 is a harvest decade. The peak. Everything you built is now expressing at maximum. The work of this decade is expression, not accumulation.
A decade in 衰, 病, or 死 is a transition decade. Energy is receding. The work is consolidation, not expansion. Trying to grow aggressively in a declining phase is planting in autumn. The soil isn't wrong. The timing is.
A decade in 墓, 绝, or 胎 is a root decade. The deepest, quietest, most invisible work happens here. Nothing looks like it's working. Everything is being prepared.
A decade in 养 or 沐浴 is a gestation decade. Gentle growth. Protected development. Don't expose the new thing too early.
The farmer who respects the season harvests. The farmer who fights the season exhausts the soil.

BaZi tells you the elemental weather arriving in each decade. ZWDS tells you which life domain is activated and which stars are governing it.
Read them together. Not separately.
A BaZi decade bringing strong Metal into a chart that needs Metal is good news. But if the ZWDS decade simultaneously activates the Health palace with challenging stars, the Metal might arrive through a health crisis that ultimately strengthens the person. The what is positive. The how requires attention.
Neither system alone tells the full story. Together, they give you the weather report and the map.
How to Use Your Decade Timeline

Open your Zhiji chart. Look at the decade sequence. Find the decade you're currently in.
Ask three questions:
What element is arriving? Is it something your chart needs? Something it already has too much of? Something completely new?
What lifecycle phase is active? Are you in a building season, a harvest season, a transition, or a root season?
What's next? The decade after your current one tells you what you're preparing for. Every decade is both a season in itself and preparation for the one that follows.
Don't try to decode the entire sequence at once. Read the decade you're in. Read the one ahead. That's enough. The chart is not a puzzle to solve. It's a map to walk.
