The Cauldron

鼎。元吉,亨。

Fire over Wind. The sacred container that transforms raw into nourished.

The Lines

初六:鼎颠趾,利出否,得妾以其子,无咎。

Line 1 — The ting is turned upside down. The old vessel must be emptied before new use.

九二:鼎有实,我仇有疾,不我能即,吉。

Line 2 — There is food in the ting. The cauldron is full and productive. Envy can't spoil what's already cooked.

九三:鼎耳革,其行塞,雉膏不食,方雨亏悔,终吉。

Line 3 — The handle of the ting is altered. The vessel works but you can't grasp it. Rain comes eventually.

九四:鼎折足,覆公餗,其形渥,凶。

Line 4 — The legs of the ting are broken. Structural failure under responsibility. Public shame.

六五:鼎黄耳金铉,利贞。

Line 5 — The ting has yellow handles and golden carrying rings. Everything is in order. The cauldron is fit for its purpose.

上九:鼎玉铉,大吉,无不利。

Line 6 — The ting has jade rings. The vessel is sacred. Everything it touches is transformed.
