There is no single "best" BaZi app, and any list that ranks one #1 for everyone is guessing. The honest answer is that it depends on what you actually want: a quick chart, a deep reading, or something that stays with you. This guide sorts the field into what it really is, tells you what separates a serious tool from a gimmick, and is upfront about where we fit.
The three kinds of BaZi tool
Most of what you will find falls into one of three buckets.
- Calculators. They plot your Four Pillars from your birth details and stop there. The best-known is Joey Yap's plotter (free, with a sign-up); there are many others. Good for seeing your raw chart; they do not interpret it, and most will not tell you what any of it means.
- AI BaZi apps. A fast-growing cluster of web and mobile apps that plot your chart and then let an AI interpret or chat about it. They vary enormously in how deep the interpretation goes, whether the chart is calculated correctly, and how honest they are about what BaZi can and cannot do. This is the most crowded and most uneven category.
- Human readings. A practitioner reads your chart in a session. The most personal option, and the most expensive; quality depends entirely on the practitioner, and a good one is hard to find and rarely available on demand.
What actually separates a good one from a gimmick
Ignore the star ratings for a moment. Four things matter more.
- Does it calculate the chart correctly? BaZi hinges on the exact solar term and the true solar time of your birth, not just the calendar date. A tool that ignores the birth hour, or uses clock time instead of solar time, will hand you the wrong chart with total confidence. Look for tools that ask for your birth time and place and say how they handle the boundaries.
- Does it go deeper than the chart? Plotting eight characters is the easy part. The value is in what they mean together, over time, for your actual life. A tool that stops at a chart, or hands you a generic paragraph per pillar, has done the cheap 10% of the work.
- Is it honest about what BaZi is? The tell of a gimmick is fear used to sell: it predicts disaster, then offers a cure conveniently for sale. A serious tool treats BaZi as a language for self-understanding and timing, not a fortune that must be escaped for a fee. (We wrote a whole honest answer on this: is BaZi real?)
- Does it remember you? A chart you re-enter every visit is a lookup. Something that holds your chart, and the people in your life, and builds on past conversations, is a different thing entirely - it can actually get to know you. Very few tools do this, and it is the difference between a calculator and a companion.
Free, paid, and what you are really paying for
Almost everything here has a free tier or a free plot, and almost everything charges for depth. That is normal and fine. The question is not "is it free" - it is "is the paid depth worth it, and is the pricing honest." Be wary of anything that dangles a free chart and then gates the real reading behind an anxious upsell. Pay for depth and honesty, not for a countdown timer.
Where zhiji fits

It will never tell you that you are cursed, and it has nothing to sell you out of fear.
