师。贞,丈人吉,无咎。

Earth over Water. Hidden strength, organized force. Disciplined collective action.

The Lines

初六:师出以律,否臧凶。

Line 1 — An army must set forth in proper order. The beginning determines the end.

九二:在师中,吉,无咎,王三锡命。

Line 2 — In the midst of the army. Good fortune. Competent leadership, recognized by authority, embedded with the troops.

六三:师或舆尸,凶。

Line 3 — The army carries corpses. Wrong leadership. Casualties, not victories.

六四:师左次,无咎。

Line 4 — The army retreats. No blame. Strategic withdrawal saves the force for the fight that matters.

六五:田有禽,利执言,无咎。长子帅师,弟子舆尸,贞凶。

Line 5 — The eldest son leads the army. Delegate to competence. The youngest son should not lead.

上六:大君有命,开国承家,小人勿用。

Line 6 — The great prince issues commands. Victory achieved. Do not give power to people who can destroy but cannot build.
