What This Is
The year and the decade arriving as one. 岁 is the flowing year; 运 is the major decade cycle that governs a ten-year arc of a life. Ordinarily they are two separate timing layers, each with its own stem and branch. 岁运并临 is the moment they become identical — the year's stem and branch fully equal the decade's. Two forces that normally act on a chart separately stack into a single, doubled impact.
The classics treat this as among the most consequential timing events in the whole system. 三命通会 records it plainly, and the old adage runs stark: when the year converges on the decade, the force is the strongest external pressure a chart will meet. Whatever that converged stem and branch represents, it arrives at full strength, undiluted by the usual interplay between the two cycles.
When It Fires
It fires when the annual pillar exactly duplicates the current decade pillar — both stem and both branch the same. Because the decade changes only once in ten years and the year once annually, the alignment is uncommon and lands, when it lands, with unusual weight. It is a compound timing signal, not an everyday transit.
What It Changes
It amplifies. Whatever the converged pillar means for the chart, that meaning is magnified by the two cycles reinforcing each other. The year ceases to be one influence among several and becomes the dominant force of the period — a concentration of a single energy pressing on the chart with the combined authority of the decade behind it.
This is why the classical literature describes it as a peak: not peak good or peak bad inherently, but peak intensity. The convergence does not soften. It delivers the full measure of whatever it carries.
How To Read It
Read it entirely by what the converged pillar is to the chart. 三命通会 gives the rule directly: where the convergence lands on 财, 官, or 印 — wealth, authority, resource, the favorable elements — it becomes a peak year of achievement, the doubled force pushing accomplishment to its height. Where it lands on 阳刃 or 七杀 as unfavorable elements, the same doubling becomes a peak of difficulty.
So the convergence is a magnifier, and its polarity is the chart's own. A favorable element converged is fortune at full volume; an unfavorable one converged is pressure at full volume. The presence of 印 to buffer and channel can ease a difficult convergence considerably. The event is never read flat — it is read through whether the chart welcomes or fears what has been doubled.
Where This Shows Up
A period of this kind is felt as concentration. Life narrows to a single dominant theme for the stretch, and that theme runs at full strength rather than sharing the stage with the usual mix of influences. When the convergence is favorable, it is the year a long arc culminates — the achievement that the decade had been building toward arriving in force. When it is difficult, it is a year that asks everything of the chart's resilience, where the pressure that defines the period leaves little room for anything else.
Either way, the texture is the same: a time that cannot be treated as ordinary. The doubling means the period carries unusual weight, and the chart-owner tends to recognize it as a hinge — a stretch that matters more than its length, for better or for harder.
