Difficulty at the Beginning (屯) — Hexagram 3. I Ching constitutional reading from 知己 Zhiji.
I Ching · Hexagram 3

Difficulty at the Beginning

☵ over ☳ · Water over Thunder

Water over Thunder. A storm breaking over the first shoots of spring. The energy to grow is real, but the conditions are chaotic.

屯 is the hexagram of the startup, the first day, the new project that has all the potential and none of the infrastructure yet.

The Lines

Line 1 — Hesitation and hindrance. Don't go alone. The beginning is too chaotic for solo effort. Find the right people before you move.

Line 2 — Difficulties pile up. Not a robber but a suitor. What looks like a threat is actually an opportunity.

Line 3 — Hunting deer without a guide. Going after the prize without knowing the terrain. If you don't have a guide, stop.

Line 4 — Seek union. Swallow pride and go to the ally you need.

Line 5 — Difficulties in blessing. Apply gentle, consistent effort. Forcing the blessing to arrive faster destroys it.

Line 6 — Tears of blood flow. The difficulty was never resolved. This line is a warning: if the foundation was never built, the structure collapses.

Nuclear Hexagram

Nuclear Hexagram: 23 剥 (Stripping Away)

Inside every difficult beginning is the stripping away of what isn't essential.

Practical Application

屯 appears at the start of something important. Don't force order onto chaos. Find helpers, accept that the path is unclear, and take small steps.
