Youthful Folly

蒙。亨。匪我求童蒙,童蒙求我。初筮告,再三渎,渎则不告。利贞。

Mountain over Water. A spring at the foot of a mountain. Clear water emerging but not yet knowing its direction.

蒙 is inexperience, not stupidity. The student who doesn't know what they don't know.

The Lines

初六:发蒙,利用刑人,用说桎梏,以往吝。

Line 1 — Discipline the fool. Basic discipline is needed. Structure the chaos. But don't over-punish.

九二:包蒙,吉。纳妇,吉。子克家。

Line 2 — Bear with fools kindly. The wise guide who doesn't lord their wisdom over the student. The best line in the hexagram.

六三:勿用取女,见金夫,不有躬,无攸利。

Line 3 — Do not take a maiden who sees a man of bronze. Losing yourself to someone impressive. Being dazzled by appearance instead of substance.

六四:困蒙,吝。

Line 4 — Entangled folly. Humiliation. Too far from reality. The fool surrounded by other fools.

六五:童蒙,吉。

Line 5 — Childlike folly. Good fortune. The genuine beginner who admits they don't know and asks honestly.

上九:击蒙,不利为寇,利御寇。

Line 6 — Punishing folly. The lesson arrives as consequence. Don't punish more than necessary.
