The Constitution
A chart given over entirely to one element. The day master is 甲 or 乙 Wood, the branches gather a Wood bureau (亥卯未) or the Eastern direction (寅卯辰), and Wood so dominates the chart that the right reading is not to balance it but to follow it. This is one of the 一行得气格, the formations of a chart given to a single element. 木曰曲直, the classics say — wood is the bending and the straight — and its nature is 仁, benevolence, growth, the upward reaching.
A clean 曲直格 person carries that nature whole. Not Wood among other elements, but Wood as the entire chart: the benevolent, growing, reaching character running pure, undiluted by the usual mix of forces. The self is the single element, fully.
The formation runs with Wood, with the Water that feeds it, and with the Fire that drains it cleanly; it is broken by Metal, which conquers Wood and shatters the single-element purity. The reading is whether the Wood dominance is total and whether any Metal threatens to break it.
What You See That Others Don't
You see in terms of growth and what is alive. Where others weigh competing factors, you perceive the world through a single lens — what is growing, what is benevolent, what reaches toward more. The reading is constitutional. Your chart is Wood entire, so the generative and the kind are not preferences but the whole of how you apprehend things.
You also carry a purity of nature others find rare. There is no internal contradiction of elements in you on this axis — the benevolent, growing impulse runs without competing drives muddying it. That wholeness is the single-element gift: a character that is all one thing, clearly.
What Most People Get Wrong About You
They read your single-mindedness as naivety, your benevolence as a refusal to be hard, your relentless growth-orientation as an inability to cut and consolidate. The reading mistakes a pure single element for an incomplete one.
曲直格 is not someone missing the other elements through deficiency. It is someone whose chart is given wholly to Wood — and that purity is a complete formation, not a lack. The naivety the world reads is the same benevolence that grows and cultivates without the hardness others mistake for strength. You are not missing an edge; you became Wood entirely, and a nature that is all growth and benevolence, to those built from mixed forces, can look one-sided. The wholeness is the point — and only Metal, breaking in, threatens it.
The Pattern You Carry
The configuration runs when Wood dominates totally — day master 甲 or 乙, the branches gathering the Wood bureau or Eastern direction, no Metal to break the purity. Then the chart carries the benevolent, growing nature whole, running with Wood, the Water that feeds it, and the Fire that drains it cleanly.
The trap is Metal breaking in. Metal conquers Wood, and a single-element formation is fragile precisely at its purity — a Metal stem or a Metal luck cycle shatters the dominance and turns the whole clean image to conflict. The work is to keep the formation pure and to recognize the Metal that breaks it: the single element thrives by following its nature and is endangered only by the force that cuts it.
Where This Shows Up
In work, you belong where a single, clear, benevolent drive is the asset — cultivation, growth-oriented building, fields that reward a generative and humane vision carried with whole-hearted consistency. You do well where your purity of purpose is a strength rather than where competing demands require you to be many things at once.
In relationships, you bring a whole-hearted benevolence — a growing, nurturing warmth that runs clear and uncomplicated. The same purity can read as one-note or as missing a harder edge. The configuration's work is to let the single nature be its full gift while staying aware of the Metal that breaks it — protecting the benevolent wholeness from the conflicts that would shatter it, and offering its clear growth as a steadiness others can grow alongside.
